Book Description: For months part-angel Clara Gardner trained to face the fire from her visions, but nothing prepared her for the choice she was forced to make that day. Now, torn between her love for Tucker and her complicated feelings about the roles she and Christian seem destined to play in a world that is both dangerous and beautiful, Clara struggles with a shocking revelation: someone she loves will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.
Review by Esther Fong: Clara Gardner is just your average teenage girl. Well apart from the fact that she is a part-angel. Hallowed is the sequel to the highly successful Unearthly by Cynthia Hand. After the events of Unearthly, Clara is torn between her love for Tucker and her purpose to save Christian. Clara begins to have new shocking visions, visions in which someone that she loves will die in just a few short months. Clara must deal with this tragedy while learning more about her angel heritage more then she wanted to know. Will Clara follow her true purpose as shown in her visions or will she use her free will and follow her heart?
Hallowed deals with the joys and trails of first love, grief and loss, and the fear of finding out who you truly are. Yes there is the typical teenage love triangle but Hand provides us with a very well written book in which we can connect with the main characters (while not thinking they are stalkers). The reader is able to feel Clara’s struggle and grief as well as her joys and happiness. Hand also provides readers with a refreshingly new take on angels on earth further engaging the reader hoping to find out more.
About the Author: Cynthia Hand divides her time between Southern California, where she lives with her husband and son, and southeast Idaho near the Teton mountains. She teaches creative writing at Pepperdine University.
