He was a lethal vampire, bound by an ancient curse.
She was an agent of homeland security,

Theirs was a Blood Destiny about to unfold…

Descended from the progeny of Celestial Gods and humans, Nathaniel Silivasi is handsome, seductive, and powerful beyond measure: a lethal vampire. Belonging to an ancient civilization that sacrificed its females to the verge of extinction, he is also cursed. Like all the sons of Jadon, he is incapable of producing female offspring and required to sacrifice a first born son as atonement for the sins of his forefathers. He belongs to a modern civilization, yet he is bound by primeval law.

When Jocelyn Levi stumbles upon Nathaniel’s pristine mountain valley, she is not prepared for the collision of worlds that is about to confront her. As an agent of the homeland security department, ICE, the beautiful, defiant female has an agenda of her own: to stop the ritualistic slaughter of innocent young women by a human trafficking ring. Little does she know that the evil she seeks is unlike any other she has ever encountered. She has entered a world of warriors, code, and mystery where the predators are divided only by degrees of light and shadow, and the dark, handsome stranger who has come to her aid is the most dangerous of all.

Review – Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Title: Paranormalcy
Author: Kiersten White
Series: The Paranormalcy Series
Genre: Fantasy/Science
Age Group: Teen / Young Adult
Release Date: 31st August 2010
Publishers: HarperCollins (Aus)

Book Summary: All Evie wants is to be normal … instead, she?s stuck at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising death and destruction to the world.

Evie?s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, despite the fact that she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA), she can see through paranormals? glamours, her best friend is a mermaid, and her ex-boyfriend is a lunatic-and a faerie.

In a world where paranormals are monitored and controlled, Evie has at least been able to take comfort in the fact that she?s human…Until she finds out she?s not. With everything she believes called into question, Evie?s drawn to the newest IPCA prisoner, a shapeshifter named Lend. Unfortunately their friendship and flirting is complicated by the information he carries: a faerie prophecy of death and destruction that seems to revolve around Evie herself.

So much for normal.

My Thoughts: Paranormalcy is a fun, quirky, teen fantasy novel by debut author Kiersten White.

I loved Evie, the snarky, squeeing and often naive main character. Evie just wanted a bit of normalcy in her life but instead her world starts falling apart and she finds that she is anything but normal. The only shining light for Evie is her new friendship with Lend, a teenage (watery) boy that IPCA are holding as a prisoner.

Kiersten’s take on mythology was refreshing and entertaining and I found it to be a very easy read. I liked that the story took some unpredictable turns and kept me guessing until the end.

I’m looking forward to Supernaturally the next book in the series which is due out in 2011.

My Rating: (out of 5)

More Books in the Series:

2. Supernaturally – coming in 2011
Evie, Lend, Reth, Arianna, Raquel, David . . . And Jack. Life’s never fair when faeries are involved.
3. Coming in 2012

About the Author: Kiersten White is the NYT Bestselling author of Paranormalcy. She has one tall husband and two small children and lives near the ocean, where her life is perfectly normal. This abundance of normal led her to a fascination with all things paranormal, including but not limited to , faeries, and pop culture.

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins
Release Date: April 2010
Publisher: Simon and Schuster

Sophie Mercer’s first term at Hex Hall turned out to be quite eventful. First the ghost of her evil grandmother haunted her every move, then her best friend was accused of murder and of course there was the discovery that Archer Cross, aka the boy of her dreams, was actually an undercover demon hunter – which would probably be something she could have worked on, if she hadn’t also discovered that she was actually the demon Archer was hunting…
So, despite their issues, Sophie is actually relieved to be spending the summer in London with her father. But when your father is Head of The Council of Prodigium and your summer is being spent at the headquarters of everything magical, then a quiet holiday isn’t really that likely. And, as Sophie struggles to come to terms with her new found demon powers, she finds herself thrust once again into a world of dark magic and conspiracies. The only thing that could possibly make things more complicated would be for Archer Cross to show up again, which of course he wouldn’t, would he?

Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins
Release Date: March 2011
Publisher: Simon and Schuster

Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch.
That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (aka witches, shapeshifters, and fairies). But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.
Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers.
But once Sophie arrives she makes a shocking discovery. Her new friends? They’re demons too. Meaning someone is raising them in secret with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she?

As many of you know the first book in Cassandra Clare’s prequel to the Mortal Instruments series was released at the end of August.

I was lucky enough to get a couple of copies from the Publishers (Walker Books Australia) and wrote a review which you can read it here. The second copy was sent to Kayla from my Review Team and now it’s her turn to share her thoughts :)

When it came to books by Cassandra and their success this one was no different from the rest. Like the other books in the series this one was suspenseful, engaging, captivating and so many more feelings along those lines. Most readers of The Mortal Instruments worried about this book not living up to the standards of the others books but let me say they don’t have to worry this book took awhile to really pick up for me but when it did I could not put it down. Clockwork Angel had great moments in it that kept me reading and I’m sure kept a lot of others too. I especially love the cast of characters Cassandra has created, I know we all you love to hate them or just love them. Cassandra has an amazing talent when it comes to writing and it really shows within this book, mainly because it was set in the 1800’s but never the less I recommend everyone buys a copy.

Review – Dark Peril by Christine Feehan

Title: Dark Peril
Author: Christine Feehan
Series: ‘Dark‘ Carpathian Series (Book #18)
Age Group: Adult
Release Date: 1st September 2010 (Aus)

Author’s Website

Book Summary: Dominic, of the Dragonseeker lineage—one of the most powerful of the Carpathian lines—is desperate to go to the very heart of the enemy camp and learn their plans. There’s only one way to do so: ingest the parasitic blood of a vampire. He knows that it is a mission from which there is no return. With little time before the blood takes effect, he’ll get the information he needs, relay it to the leader of the Carpathians, and go out fighting. There is no more honorable way to end his life.
Solange Sangria is one of the last of the jaguar people, a royal pureblood, a dying species that cannot recover from bad decisions made over hundreds of years. She has long been alone, fighting to save the remaining shapeshifters from the hands of Brodrick the Terrible: her own father, who slaughtered her family and everyone she loved. Wounded and weary, she plans one last battle, hoping to stop the man who has made an alliance with the , accepting that she will not come out alive.
They are two warriors who have lived their lives alone. Now, at the end of their time, they find each other—an obstacle neither can hope to ignore.

‘Dark Peril’ is the latest book in the Carpathian series by Christine Feehan. The Carpathians are a race of people who survive by drinking human blood, unlike vampires they do not kill their prey, preferring to place their prey in a trance whilst taking their blood. Carpathians can only become vampire by succumbing to their ‘bloodlust’ whilst feeding and killing the human; losing their lifemate or failing to find their lifemate. Lifemates are human women with some psychic ability who become lifemates after three blood exchanges and the chanting of the ritual mating words. Males recognize their lifemates by the fact that, as they lose the ability to see in colour and also lose their emotions after their first 200 years this can only be restored upon finding their lifemate.

Through this series we learn of the evil vampires/mage that seek to destroy the Carpathians by infecting the women with parasites that whilst being ineffective to the adults have a reaction to any children that are born, with most not surviving their first year and the ones that do survive are mostly male. We learn of the special abilities of the Carpathians, and there are definately some heart stopping moments (some hot ones too!)in the battle against the very people that would see the extinction of the Carpathians.

In this book we meet Dominic of the dragonseeker bloodline who is on a final journey for his Prince in which he has volunteered to ingest blood that has the parasites, which will enable him to gain entry into the enemy camp and gather valuable info about the battle that is being waged against the Carpathians, after which he plans to “greet the sun” (a form of suicide) as he has not found his lifemate in over a thousand years. On his journey he meets Solange, who is of the jaguar bloodline and who is also on a mission to protect the women of her species from the males who kidnap them, rape them and force them to bear their children. Both are warriors for their people and join forces to fight a common enemy. Dominic finds that Solange is his lifemate and sets about winning her trust before he converts her to be his lifemate, thereby saving him, as once mated a Carpathian cannot leave his lifemate when they are bonded body and soul.

Christine Feehan has written a sensuous and seductive series of the vampiric Carpathians which takes us on a journey into the Carpathian world, a journey you don’t want to miss! Each book can be read as a ‘stand alone’ but to understand the battle for survival they face, and to meet all the people in the Carpathian world, I recommend you get the series, starting with ‘Dark Prince’.

Title: The Vampire Queen’s Servant
Author: Joey W. Hill
Series: The Vampire Queen Series (Book #1)
Genre:
Fantasy / Erotic / Romance
Age Group:
Adult
Release Date:
3rd July 2007 (Aus)

Book Summary: Lady Elyssa Yamato Amaterasu Wentworth is a centuries-old vampire who’s been given a new servant-Jacob, a total alpha male unaccustomed to submitting to any woman’s wishes. What really binds Jacob to her are not her sensual midnight hungers, but something far more provocative. It stirs her blood, renews her life, and awakens her soul like only true love can. The passion between Elyssa and Jacob yields something else unexpected-a shared history that reaches back through the centuries and is fated to challenge their destiny like nothing ever will again.

In this book, the first in a series , we meet Lady Lyssa (vampire queen) and Jacob (her human servant). In a world where have no regard for humans there is an attraction between them that goes beyond the submissive servant that she requires. This story is passionate, erotic and one you definitely can’t put down until you find out what happens to the two soul mates ! Definitely a keeper and I would highly recommend getting the whole series as Lyssa and Jacobs story concludes in the next book “Mark of the Vampire Queen”, with characters from these books having their stories told in the following books!

What can I say. This was not what I was expecting and I am so pleased by that. I was expecting a book written as a period piece, not that I would have minded that, but I am really impressed with the way the story unfolded and was delivered in modern day, with modern references.
I love the characters, Jacob, of course being my favourite. A roguish Irishman with the soul of a pure gentleman. I love how he is introduced and first meets the vampire queen Lyssa, as it drew me in and captured my curiosity which is something I enjoy immensely when reading a new book. Also though, the minor characters of Rex, Carnal and Thomas help to bind the story together making it more believable and real.
I love how Jacob and Lyssa interact. There is an erotic sensuality that is so strong that you can almost feel like you are apart of the relationship that is forming, even though Lyssa is fighting every step of the way, but at the same time there is a cruelty in her that you almost expect from a vampire, to explode out at any minute.
There is always an underlying current of fear and anxiousness with Jacob always wanting to protect Lyssa, and Lyssa trying to fight off other vampires who are trying to undermine her authority, and overthrow her, throwing the vampire council into turmoil and unleashing a savage cruelty on the unsuspecting world. But she fights on keeping her mysterious illness to herself as long as she can to avoid showing weakness.
Overall this was very easy to read and I really enjoyed it. I wouldn’t be disappointed if there was a lot more to the story.

Infinite Days, written by Rebecca Maizel, is a story about Lenah a 592 year old vampire who wakes only to find herself human and in the 21st century. The story is well written and the historical tinge to it lends credence to Lenah’s character. The way she goes about figuring out who she wants to be and how she has to go about getting there is in some parts moving and in others frustrating, the emotions Lenah experiences are almost tangible.

Infinite Days is a good read and the plot is easy to follow, the characters are likeable (or dislikable) and I really enjoyed the way in which the characters interacted with one another, however the only critisism (if you could call it that) is that it wasn’t long enough. I found myself visualising the characters as I read and found myself wondering how they would react to certain situations that arose.

Clockwork Angel – Read an Excerpt Here!

To help celebrate the release of Cassandra Clare’s new novel Clockwork Angel, the first book in the Infernal Devices series and the prequel to The Mortal Instruments series, Walker Books have given me an excerpt to share with you.

Here is an excerpt from Chapter 8:

Camille

Fruits fail and love dies and time ranges;
Thou art fed with perpetual breath,
And alive after infinite changes,
And fresh from the kisses of death;
Of languours rekindled and rallied,
Of barren delights and unclean,
Things monstrous and fruitless, a pallid
And poisonous queen.
—Swinburne

Tessa was only halfway down the corridor when they caught up to her: Will and Jem, each walking on either side of her. “You didn’t honestly think we weren’t going to come along, did you?” Will asked, raising his
hand and letting the witchlight flare up between his fingers, lighting the corridor to a daylight brightness. Charlotte hurrying along ahead of them, turned and frowned, but said nothing.
“I know you can’t leave anything well enough alone.” Tessa looked straight ahead. “But I thought better of Jem.”
“Where Will goes, I go,” Jem said, good-naturedly. “And besides, I’m as curious as he is.”
“That hardly seems a subject for boasting. Where are we going?” she added, startled, as they reached the end of the corridor. The hall stretched away behind them; there was nothing in front of them but a blank stone
wall. “Have we turned the wrong way . . .?”
“Patience is a virtue, Miss Gray,” said Will. “You would do well to learn it.”
“If you think—” Tessa began, and broke off as Charlotte took a stele from the pocket of her voluminous skirt. It seemed to glow with a dull internal light as Charlotte placed the tip of it against the stone of the
wall, and drew, as if she were scrawling on a piece of paper. A thick black line spiraled out from the tip, forming the whorls and scrolls of a strong, delicate design.
As Tessa stared, a grinding noise came from within the stone, and a section of the wall swung open, showing another long corridor beyond.
The walls were bare of tapestries or torches: Tessa realized why Will had lit his witchlight stone. He raised his hand now, and the light shone down into the corridor, which Tessa could se now was sharply curving, disappearing almost instantly away into shadows.
“This is the entrance to our Sanctuary,” said Charlotte. “This is the place we meet with those who for whatever reason cannot enter hallowed ground. Those who are cursed. .”
She started down the corridor, the others following after her.
“Is it a curse? Being a vampire?” Tessa asked.
Charlotte shook her head. “No. We think it is a sort of demon disease. There are demons who feed on blood, and demons who, like werewolves, shift their shapes with the phases of the moon and the movement of planets. When passed to humans, these diseases manifest in what we think of as vampirism or lycanthropy. Most demon diseases aren’t transmissible to humans at all, with a few exceptions—”
“Demon pox,” interrupted Will.
“Will, there’s no such thing as demon pox, and you know it,” Charlotte said. “Now, where was I?”
“Being a vampire isn’t a curse,” Tessa filled in. “But they still can’t enter hallowed ground, then? Does that mean they’re damned?”
“That depends on what you believe,” said Jem. “And whether you even believe in damnation at all.”
“But you hunt demons. You must believe in damnation!”
“I believe in good and evil,” said Jem. “And I believe the soul is eternal. But I don’t believe in the fiery pit, the pitchforks, or endless torment. I do not believe you can threaten people into goodness.”
Tessa looked at Will. “What about you? What do you believe?”
“Pulvis et umbra sumus,” said Will, not looking at her as he spoke. “I believe we are dust and shadows. What else is there?”
“Whatever you believe, please don’t suggest to Camille Belcourt that you think she’s damned,” said Charlotte. She had come to a halt where the corridor ended in a set of high iron doors, each carved with a curious symbol that looked like four back-to-back C’s. She turned and looked at her three companions. “She’s very kindly offered to help us, and there’s no purpose in offering her such insults. That applies to you especially, Will. If you can’t be polite, I’ll send you out of the Sanctuary. Jem, I trust you to be your charming self. Tessa . . .” Charlotte turned her grave, kind eyes on Tessa. “Try not to be frightened.”

Book Summary: Magic is dangerous but love is more dangerous still

The Infernal Devices trilogy, a prequel to bestselling The Mortal Instruments trilogy, follows 16-year-old orphan Tessa Fell, whose quiet life is thrown into turmoil when her older brother Nathaniel suddenly vanishes, leaving her alone. Tessa’s search for him leads her to England during the reign of Queen Victoria, into London’s dangerous underworld, where warlocks throw masked balls for half-demon Downworlders and and supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. When the friendless and hunted Tessa discovers that she herself is a Downworlder, she must learn to trust her natural enemies, the demon-killing Shadowhunters, if she ever wants to learn to control her powers and find her brother. Drawn ever deeper into their world, she finds herself fascinated by – and torn between – two best friends; beautiful Will, a Shadowhunter hiding a deadly secret, and the devoted Jem, whose addiction to a demon drug is slowly destroying him. Tessa quickly realises that love may be the most dangerous magic of all and must draw on all her strength to save her brother and keep herself alive in this deadly new world. (Walker Books Australia and New Zealand)

My Thoughts: After having read Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series and loving it, I had very high expectations for this book and Cassandra did not disappoint me! I loved it! I couldn’t put it down and when I was forced away from it by my children and my family duties, I was thinking about the characters and what could possibly happen next.

The plot was very well thought out and took many different twists and turns along the way. There were some surprises that I didn’t see coming which is always a bonus and Cassandra did her research well and took us on a tour of England in Victorian times with perfect detail.

The main character Tessa is an easy character to like and Will is cocky and mysterious while Jem is sweet and very gentlemanly. A perfect combination of characters in my eyes! For those of you that have read the Mortal Instruments, you will see some similarities between Will and Jace (from the MI series) and I really like that. There are also a few familiar characters and a few names that you will recognise throughout the story. Having said that, you don’t have to have read the Mortal Instruments series before reading Clockwork Angel, but I wouldn’t mind betting that you will want to get your hands on the MI series the minute you put down CA.

I would have liked to learn why Will acts as he does and more about his family, as well as Tessa’s parent’s story but I’m quite sure that all that will be revealed in later books which I am eagerly anticipating.

Fans of The Mortal Instruments Series will not be disappointed with the first book in the Infernal Devices Series and I am very happy that I have found another series to fall in love with.

My Rating: (out of 5)
