Book SummaryEtienne, son of a lord in the kingdom of Armorique, goes to train as a knight with Geraint of Lucanne. Geraint is brave and kind, a good teacher and master – but he has a secret that he has kept from his family. He is bisclavret, a born werewolf. When Geraint is betrayed, Etienne must ally with the local wise-woman and her daughter, themselves bisclavret, to save his lord. But time is running out. If Geraint’s enemies have their way, Geraint will soon be trapped in his wolf form.

And Etienne has his own secret. The decisions he makes will change his life forever . . .

Inspired by a medieval romance, this engaging novel forces us to question everything we thought we knew about werewolves.

My Thoughts: Wolfborn is not the type of book I would normally read, but I’m so glad I got the opportunity to. I have read books, read young adult books, read books about werewolves and fairies but I have never before read a medieval book.

This book has it all, werewolves, fairies and Celtic gods, all tied up in a medieval love story.

Bursztynski’s inspiration came from a twelfth century collection of stories by Marie de France called Breton Lais. Her story is based loosely on one of these short pieces called Lai Le Bisclavret about a happily married knight known as Bisclavret who keeps the secret of his werewolf curse from his wife until she eventually finds out then leaves him. Sue however took the story to a new level with the addition of some very prominent characters, who have a story to tell of their own.

Once I got past my difficulty with the pronunciation of names and places, the story flowed easily and I found myself wanted to find out more and more and more.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in paranormal romances who want to read something a little bit different.

My Rating: (out of 5)

sue bursztynskiAbout the Author: Sue Bursztynski grew up in Melbourne’s beachside suburbs, where she still lives. As a child, she used to sit on the beach to write, but later learned to write anywhere she could sit down with a pen and paper. She was thrilled to get her first computer, which meant she could make changes without having to re-write or re-type the whole story. She was even more thrilled when the Internet came along and made research much easier. Sue sold her first book, MONSTERS AND CREATURES OF THE NIGHT, in 1993 and has sold many more books, short stories and articles since then. Her book POTIONS TO PULSARS: WOMEN DOING SCIENCE was a CBCA Notable Book. Sue works in a school in Melbourne’s western suburbs, where she tests out her writing on the students. She reviews children’s and young adult books for JANUARY MAGAZINE and reads story submissions for ANDROMEDA SPACEWAYS INFLIGHT MAGAZINE. When not writing, Sue enjoys reading, music, blogging, great movies and handcraft. She also loves history, but has no problem fiddling with it for her fantasy fiction.

Book Summary: She can control her pack, but not her heart . . .While other teenage girls daydream about boys, Calla Tor imagines ripping out her enemies throats. And she wouldn’t have it any other way. Calla was born a warrior and on her eighteenth-birthday she ll become the alpha female of the next generation of Guardian wolves. But Calla s predestined path veers off course the moment she saves the life of a wayward hiker, a boy her own age. This human boy s secret will turn the young pack’s world upside down and forever alter the outcome of the centuries-old Witches’ War that surrounds them all. . .

This story is mainly about a choice between destiny and love. It revolves around Calla a female Alpha wolf or Guardian who is destined to be mated with Alpha Male Ren, this has been destined since they were 5 years old and now at 17 it is only months away. Calla has accepted this as it is the way of her pack. That is until she saves the life of a human, Shay, who turns her life and destiny upside down.

Calla has to choose between her loyalty and love for her pack (and Ren) and her forbidden love for Shay. Although Calla cannot resist Ren’s affection she is inexplicably drawn to Shay, who turns out to have a greater destiny than anyone knew and proves to be very important to the future of her pack and her life.

This book draws you in from the very beginning, it is well written and I for one could not put it down. The story delves into the background of this fascinating world of Keepers (witches/wizards), Guardians (wolves) and Searchers (opposing wizards). I read the first 15 chapters the first day I picked it up. It definitely appeals to fantasy love story readers of all ages. I have 13 year old and 17 year old daughters and they also loved this book.

I wait with great anticipation for the second book in the series “Wolfsbane”.

Review – Linger by Maggie Stiefvater

Title: Linger
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Series: The Wolves of Mercy Falls (Book #2)
Age Group: Kids /
Release Date: 1st August 2010 (Aus)
Publisher: Scholastic

Author’s Website

Book Summary: In Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past . . . and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabelle, who already lost her brother to the wolves . . . and is nonetheless drawn to Cole. At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love – the light and the dark, the warm and the cold – in a way you will never forget.

My Thoughts: While Linger wasn’t as fast paced and there wasn’t the same sense of urgency as Shiver (the first book in the Wolves of Mercy Falls) it still had me wanting to keep reading to find out what was happening in Grace and Sam’s unusual lives. Linger is definitely not a light hearted read. There are many emotional moments so make sure you have the tissues handy.

I liked the addition of the new character Cole and it was interesting to watch his character evolve. I’m looking forward to reading more about him in the final book in the series Forever (due out in July 2011).
